Martin L. Hudson


As a child, Martin Hudson would roam the streets of his south side neighborhood, observing his neighbor’s daily activities through the lens of his empty super 8mm camera. It wasn’t until he saw the movie “The Exorcist” that he realized it was time to move to the next level and find a way to purchase film stock.

Martin eventually learned the craft of filmmaking at James Taylor’s Community Film Workshop, a well-known training ground in Chicago for budding filmmakers. Also during that time, with the help of a friend, Martin gained access to the University of Chicago’s Documentary Film Group’s’ library, where he was introduced to the work of world renowned filmmakers like, Robert Bresson, Akira Kurosawa, Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick and others. Watching these films would change his perception of what movies could do.

Later he enrolled at The Art Institute of Chicago’s film department, but left a year into the program after receiving an internship at the Illinois Film Office, as a result of a short film he directed one year earlier, titled “Reflections.” While at the film office Martin worked as a production assistant on a number of feature projects including Paul Brickman’s, Men Don’t Leave and Mark Harmon’s, The Tender, while continuing to direct his own super 8 and 16mm experimental short films.

After leaving the Illinois Film Office, Martin continued working in the film industry as a Key Assistant Location Manager on such films as, Road To Perdition, Collateral and the upcoming Michael Mann movie, Public Enemies.

Over the past eighteen years Martin has worked on over 30 feature films, television programs, music videos and commercials. He is also a proud member of the Director’s Guild Of America. Most recently, Martin completed a short film version of the feature project he plans to direct in the fall of 2009. The short film is also titled The Black Shield.
